Seirously, when did egotistical fucks come about and decide the playing games online shouldn’t be fun?

I know this is defintly NOT a new issue, but I didn’t relise just how bad it was, almost makes me proud for being a Quake3 Snob.

As you guys know, I’ve been getting right into playing Left 4 Dead. Normaly I’m playing campaign with a bunch of mates, or verses if we can find 8 or 6 people wanting to play (just kill the suvivor bot), but I’ve also played a handfull of public games of verses, and man, I can’t believe how some people are.

For example, last night, me and rapidDazz were playing with a bunch of atmicans, 4 of them were on suvivors, me and Dazz where on the infected team (well starting infected team) with two guys we had let in from the public ’cause we felt like a big game.
Now, anyone whos playing with me, knows that I can either have moments of pure genius (Psyco M16 on the last level of Blood Harvest anyone?), but mostly I just pure suck. Yes, I’m not good at the game, but its bloody fun.
Now, on the suvivor team, for the first few rounds, yes, I DID get knocked down a few times, hell I even died in one round fairly quickly, and my score for infected was a constant 100-200 below everyone else. Now, me and Dazz were trying to work as a team, the other two we were trying to work with as well… altho they felt like doing their own thing, alerting the hord, getting boomered ’cause they wont listen, etc. Basicly things me and Dazz were doing, but without the team work. I then get verbaly assulted through my head set about how much I suck, and I’m the reason why the team lost, and its my fault that HE isn’t winning.
Ok, WTF? I can understand frustration at loosing… but I dunno, maybe its the older games I’ve played, where we… you know… HELP those who arn’t going well? Maybe give them some tips on how to play better? Maybe try to figure out a stratergy on how to win whilst using this player who isn’t so good?
It even got sugested to me that I come back and play Verses once I am better at Verses…. HELLO HOW AM I MENT TO GET BETTER WITHOUT PLAYING!
Dazz callvotes to boot the guy, and the team kicks him (after he yells into the mic “oh you guys are all fuckign retarded playing with him!”). So we play through a few more maps, then all of a sudden I get knocked down. As Dazz is running to get me back up, one of my team mates spams and kills me.
When asked why he did it, vairous responses from the guy came in raging from “Hes crap, who cares” to things like “N**** dies first always stupid idiot” (I was playing as Louis).

At this point, me and rapidDazz just quit the server. We didn’t say anything, nothing needed to be said.
We were both shocked, it was like the game wasn’t meant to be fun, and the only thing that mattered was personaly winning.

After chatting on IRC, apparently this is well spread around all modern games, and has even seeped into some clasic ones. The reason I say modern games is, I play ALOT of games pre-2003, and we never see anyone acting like this. NEVER. We get the odd person who cheats, or shows off with newbies. But we NEVER ridicule, harras, or belittle other players. And if they DO truly suck, we try and help them improve by being helpfull, not insulting (eg. Q3A, someone joins, and their aim is off, we typicaly try and help with find comfortable mousesettings, or help them formulate stratergys where theres no great aim involved [rocket use].).

I was shocked to hear that this kind of thing happens even in Counter Strike. Yes, shock horror, the worst game for kiddie-hack-accusing ever, but still, I had refused to believe that, since when I used to play upto v1.5 (I was going to purchase 1.6 or source on steam untill this was revieled), we got the odd idiot, but they were generaly put in their place, and the game continued on. Apparently now, the smacktards actualy outweigh the decent players but such a large margin that the game can become unfun!

Personally I’m GLADE that by playing only with friends, or on LAN, or sticking to older style games, that I’ve avoided all of this. Its horrible, disgusting, and people need to remember just what they are doing.
