Virtual Folders
March 24th, 2009Now, I know there are many photo organisation programs around, for many different platforms. There is even some really good online based ones (Flickr, and PhotoBucket spring to mind, as does Facebook’s photo application). But they all fail, in my opinion, is one feature that should be in any photo organiser.
That is, the use of virtual folders. The idea is, dump all your photos in one folder, unorganised, then use the program/virtual folders to organise them.
This eliminates copy & pasting things here and there, and allows you to organize things in many different ways, so finding what you are looking for is quick and simple. This idea of virtual folders couldn’t just be used for photos, almost any type of data can be stored and organised with them. Imagine how easy it would be if you had all your documents sorted into different categorys, but they really all saved to one “real” location? What about videos? Or music?
What about the benifits of network shares? One person might want the files organised in X way, and another who uses them files might want to do it in Y way. Now instead of them arguing over it, and changing folder structures on each other, why not have each logon see the folders/files how they would organise them? The files save to the same place, but the folder structure each person sees is different?
Ok, obviously a system like that is NOT good for big organisations and buisnesses, but in those situations, the company policies and rules would dictate how everything is organised and stored anyway, but for home users, its brilliant.
Now, the sad thing is, I’ve only seen this idea of a virtual folder implemented in two ways really well. And sadly for Windows and Linux users, who are usualy at the forfront of good ideas, and usefull things, Apple has been the first to market. Not with a re-hash of old tech, in a new shell that people will actualy use, but as their own thing.
iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie.
Yes, what they do can probably be done better in other programs, and by physicly making and naming folders your self, but then your locked into one way of doing the task, so http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfSiEsNu2iQ
If I’m wrong, prove it to me, and I’ll gladly change my ways.
But remember, for iPhoto, its gotta have: Google Maps GPS intergration, Face recognition, event organisation.
itunes replacements has to have: coverart, and iPod compatibility
iMovie’s replacement: quick, easy to use, frame-by-frame editing, custom files editable in any program, whilst still sourcing the original avi.

Yes that IS a HUGE sweeping statement, but I don’t care, you wana know why? There iss
The first game thats made the break through into, what I believe is the never ending cycle of being played, and being played because it freakin’ rocks is Call of Duty 4.
The next game takes a huge leaf out of Counter Strikes book. Its not a perfect sequal, it really is a mod, thats become a game of its own.
