PC v Console

March 28th, 2007

Well, I finaly got my self a game for my Xbox360, and believe me, you wont guess which game I chose for it. Altho, if you understand how I view games for differnt platforms, my choice will make more sense.

When I look at PC games, and the crowd they attract, you can tell that they are more hardcore. That is, you don’t get as many casual gamers on the PC playing, due to the inherited nature of how complex a PC is compaired to a console.
To me, PC gaming is like playing a sport in a team. Console gaming is like playing a sport with friends in the back yard.
Sure there is still competition to win, but the backyard is alot more layed back, and relaxing than playing in a team.
To me, PC games are mainly played by two groups: pro-gamers, those who break the game down into a mechanical operation to make playing a series of actions coupled with quick decisions; and hardcore gamers, those who dedicate alot of time and energy into playing a game to the best that they can whilst keeping true to the game at hand.

If you look at the PC, the most popular games are those that are either used in Compeditive Gaming events, or MMORPGs that require the gamer to dedicate alot of time and effort to the game. You don’t find console games requiring, or even their players doing this.
And this fits in with my ideal of PC gaming perfectly. I’m very compeditive when it comes to PC gaming, and by the looks of it, so are alot of PC gamers. I play a PC game for an adrenilen rush that I get from competing. I guess I probably fall into the pro-gamer section of PC gamers, as all the games that I play compeditivly, I break down into simple mechanical tasks.

Now console gaming, as I said, is aimed in my opinion, more at relaxing. Take a look at the more popular games on any console platform, they include guitar hero, sing star, and adventure games like sonic or Zelda. Consoles are relaxing fun games, I don’t play a game on a console to be compeditive. (I guess thats why worms HD didn’t apeal to me as much on the xbox360).

March 15th, 2007

As you may, or may not notice, you can nolonger submit comments to my blog entries anymore.
The decision to do this was because a specific somebody, who shall remain nameless, figured it would be best to attack someone through my blog insted of a specific forum, and ofcourse, this led to said person spamming the comments section.

When this person leaves/grows up/balls drop, or whatever, THEN the comments system will come back online for all to post.

I really enjoy reading what those of you who do comment in a mature manner have to say about what I write, and I will be working on a way to have you guys still able to post, in the mean time, feel free to discuss my blog entries to me via other means.

I can’t wait for tomorow!

Penguin power!

March 13th, 2007

Ok, well my sleeping issues were starting to aleviate….. not so anymore….

Anyway, on with the penguin.
As you know I have recently decided to dive back into the world of Linux again, hoping that my old trusty Mandriva would still be good.
So I got my self a copy of Mandriva 2007, and installed it. 3D seemed to work strait out of the box (I had XGL working), and everything seemed to be nice and dandy.
Then I hit my first problem. Wireless. Now on Mandriva 2006, I have NEVER had an issue getting my Belkin wireless card working under Linux before using the ndiswrapper. Untill now. mandriva bitched to me aobut updating firmware, which I am not willing to do.
Also, I can not get Quake 3 Arena to isntall whatsoever. UT2004 works like a charm tho.

So whats next on the hit list? I’m going to kill Mandriva 2007 and replace it with Ubuntu.
I shall let you all know how that goes, altho Craig said that it has some issues with shell scripts, so we might ahve some quake/ut issues.

The alternate currency

March 9th, 2007

Ok, today, I figured I’d explain Australia’s primary currency to those who are a little young, or who are international.

400pxcarlton_draught_big_ad_400Now I’m sure everyone has used Australia’s alternate currency, the humble $, and everyone, no matter what their age is used to exchanging their little plastic notes and metal coins for goods and services.
But really, we all know thats only official.

Now, Australia’s primary currency should be fairly obvious to anyone who knows anything about the Australian culture. Beer.
Now don’t laugh, it is (for outsiders) suprising how often this liquid currency is traded for goods and services these days, and ofcourse, just like the worlds currency, the value of beer changes depending on the global environment.

For example, take a look at the LANs we host. We use a scout hall, in whitch, if we were to pay using “money” would cost $150 + bond.
Now, you see, when that gets paid in Australia’s real currency, the last time it cost S1, or One Slab.
Translate that into real money, and you are looking at $40 for a hall insted of $300.
And just like the world market, the value of beer changes.
Using the Scout Hall as an examle again, in December, just comming into summer, the weather hadn’t heated up yet, so the value of beer was in a little slump, hence the hall was going to cost us one and a half slabs. Move forward to January, the weather has heated up, and the value of beer also rises, so the hall only costs us one slab.
By the time we hit May/June, the hall will most likly cost us S2 or maby S2.5, this is due to the colder weather driving down the value of beer.

We see this use of Australia’s primary currecy everywere. A sixpack for a painted fence. A shouted round for the hard work of a new born baby, a six pack for a new computer.
It is the driving force behind Australia’s economy, and also mostlikly the reason why out $ is not worth much internationly, because other countrys refuse to trade with us in our official currency Frown

OMG! An update!

March 8th, 2007

Ok, well its been a while since I’ve writen in here (just over….. 10 days now I think), and figured I’ve give an update with the happenings that are in my life.

I’ve been haivng some issues sleeping. Now don’t start thinking this is a bad thing, its just that a very special someone has left an impresion on me that I can’t get outa my head. Its not affecting my Uni work, but I just can’t wait untill the weekend to see her again.

Speaking of Uni, it has been going great. While I still HATE the campus with a passhion (gimmi back Peninsula!) I must say that the classes are alot better, I’m learning alot more from these four classes (one of which I am re-sitting form last year), and while the workload is high, I am not overly concerned. I can feel Credits all-round this semester.

crowded_train2Over the past two weeks, I must say that I have been plesently suprised by Connex this week, sofar I have not suffered a delayed or cancled train as yet, and while yes finishing Uni at 5:00pm or 6:00pm on Wednesday or Thursday IS a little squish to get home, once you hit about Morabin, its not that bad, so the discomfort only lasts a real short time.

I have also been living with Vista the past week or so. And personaly, I think its a truly brilliant Operating System. Pitty it doesn’t like my system. I’ve had a few issues with it, of which can be read over at the CyberShack Forums. I was hoping to get a decent Vista conversation happening there. But as you can see, a certian someone tried to start a flame war. Glad I left my own thread before it even got started Frown.
So now, starting tomorow, I am going to be making my pilgramige into the world of Linux, using the latest Mandriva 2007. Yes Craig, I know its not as good as SuSE or Ubuntu, but Mandrake/Mandriva is what I’m used to.tux_ninja_by_fragmeister
The main reason for me going the way of the penguin on my desktop is simple:
-I need a linux environment for Network Admin to mess around with at home
-I only play Quake3 Arena and Unreal Tournament 2004 both of which have Linux binarys.
While I do plan on playing Stalker this month when it comes out, I have a spare 10gig HDD sitting in this system that is currently disabled I can use to dualboot.
My 160gig HDD is stay NTFS, so no worries about losing any data :P

Anyhoo, thats all I got fornow, once i got the way of the penguin I will make an update telling of my experience getting everything working. Wish me luck with getting OpenGL working on a Radeon 9600pro 256mb!
